What is a pattern?
A tul is a predetermined sequence of movements representing an encounter with imaginary opponents. ITF practises 24 patterns, associated symbolically with the 24 hours of a day. They are learned progressively.
What the practitioner develops
Patterns bring together movement, attack and defence, breathing, power and balance. In competition, technical quality and the overall performance are assessed.
Learning with an instructor
Knowing the order of movements is a starting point. Ask about the purpose of a technique, the direction of movement and the relationship between posture and control. Work at the level set by your instructor.
For competition categories and assessment procedures, consult the current rules linked from our document guide. An introductory explanation does not replace a technical syllabus.
